To mark the end of its major redevelopment project, and to officially launch the new cinema, IFI Café Bar, IFI Film Shop and other new and improved facilities, the IFI is delighted to announce details of its Open Day. Offering a day of free films to audiences old and new, for everyone from families and teens to cinematic thrill-seekers and culture vultures, the IFI Open Day promises to cater for all film tastes.
The selection ranges from classic films to previews of some hotly-anticipated new releases, along with films from many of the IFI’s programming strands including Stranger Than Fiction, IFI Family and Archive at Lunchtime, giving audiences a chance to experience the breadth of programming that is on offer year-round at the IFI. With fourteen free screenings taking place in all three cinemas, special guests, workshops and music, it promises to be a celebration to remember.
Special guests on the day will include four of the original cast members of The Ballroom of Romance; the beautifully adapted film version of William Trevor’s short story. The film captures with a high degree of accuracy the texture of life in 1950s Ireland and became an instant Irish classic when it was shown on Irish television in 1982. Brenda Fricker, Brendan Conroy, Ingrid Cragie and John Kavanagh all have fond memories making the film and we are delighted to reunite them at the screening for a short introduction.
Tickets for all films will become available at 11am on February 6th from the IFI. Tickets will not be available online or by phone, with a maximum of 4 tickets per person, all allocated on a first come, first served basis. Arrive early as tickets are expected to go quickly! And while you’re here on the day, be sure to check out our new menus in the Café Bar, with every option for less than €10, and take time to browse around the expanded IFI Film Shop.
Join us on February 6th for the celebration of an all-new IFI.
