45 YEARS

Director: ANDREW HAIGH

95 minutes, U.K., 2015, Colour, Digital

This film was released on Friday 28th August 2015 and is no longer screening.

Kate and Geoff are a couple who are days away from celebrating their 45th wedding anniversary. They appear to have an easy-going relationship, until Geoff receives some shocking news. The body of a previous girlfriend, Katya, who died in a walking accident in Switzerland, has finally been found in a glacier. While they are initially accepting of the news, Kate becomes increasingly irked by Geoff’s fond remembrances of Katya, despite the fact that their story finished before she was part of his life.

Andrew Haigh’s follow up to his remarkable debut Weekend (2011) is as striking as its predecessor, featuring superb performances from Tom Courtenay and Charlotte Rampling, and is both impeccably observed social realism and the subtlest of ghost stories. It’s a film with depth and courage, one that is insightful about aging, the differences between men and women, and how people are so casually capable of lying to even themselves. (Notes by Michael Hayden)
