A LITTLE CHAOS

Director: ALAN RICKMAN

116 minutes. U.K., 2014, Colour, D-Cinema

This film was released on Friday 17th April 2015 and is no longer screening.

Sun King Louis XIV (a splendidly imperious performance by director Alan Rickman) commissions André Le Nôtre (Matthias Schoenaerts), his master gardener and landscape architect, to oversee construction of his magnificent new gardens at the Palace of Versailles. Despite some initial reluctance, one of those hired by Le Nôtre to assist is the lowborn Sabine De Barra (Kate Winslet), recovering from personal tragedy, whose more free-spirited approach to the project breathes new life into it, and takes her to the inner circle of the King’s court, while her increasingly close relationship to Le Nôtre sparks the jealousy of his power-hungry wife (Helen McCrory).

Almost 20 years after his directorial debut with The Winter Guest, Rickman has created a visually sumptuous film populated by a host of familiar faces that lend strong support, including Stanley Tucci in a fine comedic turn. (Notes by Kevin Coyne.)
