A WINTER’S TALE

Director: ÉRIC ROHMER

114 minutes, France, 1992, Subtitled, Colour, 35mm

An examination of love and the various forms it can take, A Winter’s Tale begins on the beach as hairdresser Félicie (Charlotte Véry) engages in a brief but all-consuming holiday romance with trainee chef Charles (Frédéric van den Driessche).

Wanting to pursue the relationship, Félicie makes an error in the address she gives to him and is unable to contact him about her subsequent pregnancy and daughter, Elise. Five years later, she is in relationships with two men but still haunted by what might have been with Charles. Almost a contemporary fairy-tale, it’s an affecting and perfectly composed piece.

Official Selection/Fipresci Award, Berlin Film Festival 1992.
