Loosely based on events leading to the death of the poet Heinrich von Kleist in 1811, the latest film from Austrian auteur Jessica Hausner (Lourdes, Lovely Rita) is a mannered, daring and literate period piece set in Berlin during the Romantic Era. Heinrich (Christian Friedel) is a serious-minded young man who is so committed to the notion that love can conquer even death that he tries to convince his cousin Marie (Sandra Hüller) to join him in a suicide pact. When Marie refuses, Heinrich turns to Henriette (Birte Schnöink), the wife of a friend. Though initially dismissive of the idea, Henriette receives news that causes her to reconsider the proposal.

Invigorated by a committed young cast and employing a sly sense of humour, Amour Fou is an exquisite chamber piece taking on issues of love and death with deftness and depth. (Notes by Michael Hayden)
