EXCLUSIVELY AT IFI Loosely based on events leading to the death of the poet Heinrich von Kleist in 1811, the latest film from Austrian auteur Jessica Hausner (Lourdes, Lovely Rita) is a mannered, daring and literate period piece set in Berlin during the Romantic Era. Heinrich (Christian Friedel) is a serious-minded young man who is so committed to the notion that love can conquer even death that he tries to convince his cousin Marie (Sandra Hüller) to join him in a suicide pact. When Marie refuses, Heinrich turns to Henriette (Birte Schnöink), the wife of a friend. Though initially dismissive of the idea, Henriette receives news that causes her to reconsider the proposal. Invigorated by a committed young cast and employing a sly sense of humour, Amour Fou is an exquisite chamber piece taking on issues of love and death with deftness and depth.
