CARTEL LAND

Director: MATTHEW HEINEMAN

100 minutes, U.S.A.-Mexico, 2015, Digital

This film was released on Friday 4th September 2015 and is no longer screening.

A double prize winner at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, Cartel Land follows two vigilante groups fighting the drug cartels on either side of the border between the U.S. and Mexico. Paramilitary outfit the Arizona Border Recon is led by Tim ‘Nailer’ Foley, a former meth user. South of the border, Dr. José Manuel Mireles Valverde is the charismatic leader of the Autodefensas, armed citizens fighting against the control of the vicious Knights Templar cartel.

While the former might be considered a dangerous extremist for taking the law into his own hands, the latter could be feted for taking a stand where the notoriously corrupt law enforcement won’t; however, nothing in the war on drugs is as clear as it seems. Director Matthew Heineman gained incredible access to this world, often putting himself in life-threatening situations, to create a thrilling and thought-provoking film.
