CITIZENFOUR

Director: Laura Poitras

114 minutes, Germany-U.S.A, 2014, Colour, D-Cinema

This film closes on Thursday, November 13th.

Award-winning filmmaker Laura Poitras was developing a project about national surveillance intending to complete a trilogy of documentaries about post-9/11 America, when she started receiving encrypted messages by someone identifying themselves as Citizenfour. They turned out to be from Edward Snowden, who was preparing to blow the whistle on exactly how the NSA and many other intelligence agencies were employing massive, indiscriminate covert surveillance. Poitras travelled with Guardian journalist Glenn Greenwald to a hotel room in Hong Kong, where she filmed Snowden making his explosive revelations and dealing with the media frenzy and political storm they created.

A gripping, significant film, Citizenfour takes viewers to the heart of one of the defining stories of our time, revealing a great deal about the man at the centre of it. While he repeatedly insists he is not the story, Citizenfour shines a light on Snowden, his methods, his motives and what he has been prepared to sacrifice in disclosing the shocking extent to which privacy is invaded by governments.
