David Robert Mitchell’s striking first feature The Myth of the American Sleepover (2010) was an original portrait of teenage life which won praise and admirers on the international film festival circuit. Its eagerly awaited follow up is a committed, subtly subversive genre film that has much in common with that debut. It Follows features an excellent young cast, an evocative depiction of suburbia and patient, fluid camerawork while respecting horror movie tropes and referencing George A. Romero, John Carpenter and Hideo Nakata’s Ring (1998).

Jay (Maika Monroe) is a pretty 19-year-old who is falling for Hugh (Jake Weary). When she does sleep with him, Hugh tells her he has passed on a deadly curse which leaves her at the mercy of an unknown and implacable entity. Jay and her friends have to find a way to lift the curse. (Notes by Michael Hayden)
