MISTRESS AMERICA

Director: NOAH BAUMBACH

84 minutes, U.S.A., 2015, Colour, Digital

This film was released on Friday 14th August 2015 and is no longer screening.

Tracy is 18 years old, a freshman at New York’s Barnard College and is struggling to fit in. She has writing aspirations, but rejection from the snobbish literary society cuts deep, making her feel even more isolated. Tracy’s divorced mother is about to be married to a widower she met online and suggests that she reaches out to her soon-to-be stepsister Brooke. The pair meet in Times Square and bond after a night on the town, Brooke revealing herself as an impulsive dreamer, full of mad schemes and ideas, and their friendship serves to seduce and inspire Tracy.

As they did in Frances Ha, Noah Baumbach and Greta Gerwig collaborate to create a vivid, heartfelt and hilarious depiction of intense female friendship and young people trying to find their way in the world. Gerwig’s role as Brooke confirms her status as one of the finest comic actors of her generation, and it is to newcomer Lola Kirke’s credit that she holds her own opposite such a whirlwind of a performance.
