PANEL DISCUSSION PRESENCE AND ABSENCE: WOMEN IN CONTEMPORARY CINEMA (FREE EVENT)

This panel-led event focusing on women in film will comprise of four short presentations followed by an open discussion chaired by filmmaker Neasa Haridman.

Critic and writer Roe McDermott will present on the female voice in film criticism; Pat Murphy will relate her experiences as a feminist filmmaker; Aisling Daly from the Writers Guild will discuss the gender gap between male and female feature film writers in Ireland, and compare these statistics to those in other countries; and Ruth Barton, Lecturer in Film Studies at TCD, will explore roles for older women in film, both in Ireland and further afield.

This event is part of Beyond the Bechdel Test, our season throughout July focusing on the work of directors who have explored the complex ties between women that are an integral aspect of the films’ narratives, named after the American cartoonist Alison Bechdel who introduced the idea in her 1985 comic strip.
