As the 19th century is drawing to a close, young Scottish aristocrat Jay (Kodi Smit-McPhee) finds himself navigating the merciless American west on the trail of the love of his life. He fortuitously crosses paths with Silas Selleck (Michael Fassbender), a righteous mercenary who offers to accompany and protect Jay on his journey, for a price. The pair begin a perilous journey through treacherous terrain, during which they witness the brutal, violent nature of the emerging country. The stunning debut feature from John Maclean, formerly of the much missed musical combo The Beta Band, Slow West is a daring, beguiling western that does something more than just pay homage to the genre.

Fassbender is reliably terrific as a cowboy anti-hero, a drifter outlaw finding his moral compass, while there’s a pivotal cameo from Ben Mendelsohn as a fellow tracker with dubious intentions. (Notes by Michael Hayden.)
