Showing in wonderful 70mm, James Cameron’s pumped-up sequel to his low-budget 1984 cult classic was a pretty big deal before it ever hit cinemas, what with it being the first Hollywood movie officially budgeted at over $100 million – who knew then that the future ‘King of the World’ was only getting warmed up?
T2 showcases Arnold Schwarzenegger, then the biggest box-office proposition on the planet, at the height of his powers, as a reformed (well, reprogrammed) bad robot sent back in time to protect the future saviour of mankind (Edward Furlong) and his mum (Linda Hamilton) from the T-1000, a shape-shifting killing machine (Robert Patrick) who simply won’t be stopped. Viewed today, Cameron’s film offers a rather vivid bridge between the old-school action spectacular and the tech-driven spectacle that swiftly came to dominate cinema. The early daubings in computer-generated imagery, then ground-breaking, remain startlingly effective. And the real special effect, then as now, is Arnold. He’ll be back! (Notes by Derek O'Connor)
