THE BLING RING

Director: Sofia Coppola

90 minutes, U.S.A., 2013, Colour, D-Cinema

Sofia Coppola (Lost in Translation, Somewhere) returns to one of her favoured themes, the alienating effect of celebrity, from a different perspective in The Bling Ring – that of the fan.

Based on a Vanity Fair article that detailed the exploits of a group of capricious teenage girls in Los Angeles who used the internet to find the addresses of trashy tabloid stars such as Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan, and then track their activities in order to determine when best to burgle them, the characters’ motivation is less to do with material gain than to be in the presence of the celebrity and its trappings they so desperately desire, however vacuous or undeserved its origin.

Starring a standout Emma Watson, Leslie Mann, and Taissa Farmiga (American Horror Story), it’s an incredibly stylish and relevant portrayal of the hollowness of celebrity culture. (Notes by Kevin Coyne.)
