THE GREAT HIP HOP HOAX (IRISH PREMIERE)

Director: JEANIE FINLAY

93 minutes. UK. 2013. Colour. D-cinema

There will be a post-screening Q&A with director Jeanie Finlay.

When Scottish rap hopefuls Billy and Gavin were branded the “rapping Proclaimers” and laughed out of London by bemused music execs they hatched a brilliant plan. The friends would reinvent themselves as audacious Californian duo Silibil ‘n’ Brains and take the music world by storm.

The amazing thing is that it worked as they duped record labels and fans alike and were billed as the next big thing. What could possibly go wrong? This hilarious, at times astonishing and ultimately moving film by emerging documentary star Jeanie Finlay is truly stranger than fiction and uncovers the reality of living a lie.

“A smart morality tale about the illusory nature of celebrity, and the pressures it exerts once attained.” The Daily Telegraph

This film is showing as part of the IFI Stranger Than Fiction 2013, Documentary Film Festival (September 26th – 29th).
