THE HANGOVER LOUNGE: SHIVERS

Director: David Cronenberg

87 mins, Canada, 1975, Blu-ray

This film screened 27th March 2016.

Our monthly indulgent Sunday afternoon of brunch and a classic film.

This month’s Hangover Lounge complements the release of Ben Wheatley’s High-Rise (see page 9) with the thematically similar Shivers. Believing that humanity needs to regress to a more primal state, Dr. Emil Hobbes has created a parasitic organism that can be spread through sexual contact and which causes uncontrollable sexual urges in its host. As the parasite spreads through the luxury, ultra-modern apartment block in which the doctor lives, the community therein spirals into chaos. Cronenberg’s first full feature, produced, rather unexpectedly, by fellow Canadian director Ivan Reitman (Ghostbusters, 1984), Shivers introduced the concept of body horror that has continued to inform his work.
