An alien has landed in Glasgow. Taking the form of a woman, she drives around the city in a white van, luring lonely or lecherous men to a grim fate.

Jonathan Glazer followed his acclaimed debut Sexy Beast with the enigmatic Birth, both intelligent, distinctive works. His long-awaited return to directing with this adaptation of Michel Faber’s novel is a cause for celebration. Shot on location in Glasgow and the Scottish Highlands and featuring Scarlett Johansson perfectly cast in the role of the unknowable predatory being, Under the Skin is a startling achievement in which science fiction melds with social realism so that the everyday appears foreign and forbidding, and seduction merges with fear to the extent they are the same thing. It is undeniably challenging and genuinely disturbing; it is also a mesmerising film full of haunting, vivid images, the work of a filmmaker whose imagination appears boundless.
