WILD STRAWBERRIES & BEALTAINE 2015: CALVARY

Director: JOHN MICHAEL MCDONAGH

Drama

This film screened on Wednesday 27th & Friday 29th May 2015.

With strong scenes and language, the films of London-born John Michael McDonagh offer a very distinct view of Ireland. Where previously The Guard relied on humour and pastiche, this film looks to the Catholic Church, and the impact of its difficulties on faith, particularly that of Father James. In a towering performance by Brendan Gleeson, the priest’s life takes a turn following a confessional revelation. Not for the faint-hearted, Calvary prompts both character and viewer to contemplate “What land and country is this?”
