Too low to join (you at) dinner.” Dido Elizabeth Belle, the illegitimate, mixed-race daughter of a Royal Navy Captain describes her position to the Earl of Mansfield in whose home she has grown up. Without status, Belle aligns herself with a young emancipator, while the Earl presides over a case in which a ship’s crew is accused of drowning the slaves on board.

This revelatory drama on the period comes alive with the lead performances, particularly Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Belle.
