WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN (EVENING COURSE: SHADOW OF A GENIUS)

Director: PEDRO ALMODÓVAR

90 minutes, Spain, 1988, English subtitles

Pedro Almodóvar has commented that Hitchcock’s work is “visually the richest in the history of cinema”. One might also observe that his own work is far from being short in visual riches. Indeed Spain’s most prominent filmmaker has offered us an array of irreverent, colourful, sexualised characters and narratives that frequently allude to the work of Hollywood greats, including Hitchcock.

Almodóvar expert Abigail Keating (UCC) will present Women on the Verge…, in the context of both Almodóvar’s oeuvre and Spanish national cinema but also with reference to particular adoptions from Hitchcock, including visual style, sexuality and the fetishizing of central female characters.

This event is taking place as part of the IFI Evening Course, Shadow of a Genius (February 5th – March 12th). Full course price: €60 (€55 concessions), including tea/coffee.
