X+Y

Director: MORGAN MATTHEWS

112 minutes, U.K., 2014, Colour, D-Cinema

This film was released on Friday 13th March 2015 and is no longer screening.

Diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum and suffering a family tragedy at a young age has left Nathan (Asa Butterfield) emotionally burdened as he copes with teenage life. He finds an escape in numbers, which make more sense to him than anything else. Coached by an embittered, but attentive, teacher Mr. Humphreys (Rafe Spall) and supported by his long-suffering mother Julie (Sally Hawkins), Nathan stands a chance of landing a spot on the Great Britain team at the International Mathematics Olympiad, and is invited to attend a training camp in Taipei. Once there, he is pitched into competition with his socially awkward peers, dealing with new friendships and rivalries.

The debut fiction feature from documentary filmmaker Morgan Matthews, X+Y is a smart, sensitive insight into the workings of brilliant young minds, and there are terrific, natural performances from all the cast. (Notes by Michael Hayden.)
