Ghosts both literal and figurative abound in this delicate and unusual
love story, which won the prize for Best Director in the Un Certain Regard section of last year’s Cannes Film Festival.

Lonely Mizuki (Eri Fukatsu) is surprised one evening when her husband Yusuke (Tadanobu Asano) appears in her apartment and informs her that he died at sea three years previously. Promising to show her “beautiful places”, he offers to take her to meet those who showed him kindness on his journey home: a newspaper vendor who doesn’t realise that he is also dead; a restaurant-owning couple, one of whom is haunted by her own childhood loss; and a village in which Yusuke was a respected and beloved teacher. As they travel, the two reconnect, and in dealing with their regrets and sadnesses about their relationship, are finally able to move on. (Notes by Kevin Coyne.)
