LOUDER THAN BOMBS

Director: JOACHIM TRIER

109 minutes, USA-Norway, 2015, Digital

This film was released 22nd April 2016, and is no longer screening.

Three years have passed since the death of acclaimed war photographer Isabelle Reed (Isabelle Huppert) – her family, especially husband Gene (Gabriel Byrne), struggles to cope in her absence; youngest son Conrad (Devin Druid) has withdrawn into online gaming, while preoccupied older brother Jonah (Jesse Eisenberg) has a young family of his own to support. When Isabelle’s colleague Richard (David Strathairn) preps an article for The Times to coincide with a retrospective of her work, Gene, who has shielded Conrad from certain facts about his mother, must prepare himself for the fallout of its revelations.

Norwegian director Joachim Trier’s (Oslo, August 31st) first English-language feature skilfully shuffles chronology and perspective to intriguing effect; he is aided in his approach by uniformly superlative performances, with Gabriel Byrne rarely more affecting than in his portrayal of the bereaved Gene.
