Terence Davies (Distant Voices,Still Lives; The Long Day Closes) is justly celebrated as one of the finest directors working today; his latest film, an adaptation of Lewis Grassic Gibbon’s classic 1932 novel, is another poetic, exquisitely composed exploration of memory and the past.

Agyness Deyn stars as Chris Guthrie, the teenage daughter of a farming family in Northeast Scotland eking a hardscrabble existence under the watchful eye of their tyrannical father (Peter Mullan, bringing his customary nuance to the role). Chris is forced to shelve her plans of freedom and escape as events conspire to make her the de facto head of this most dysfunctional of families. A measure of happiness does arrive in the form of handsome young Ewan Tavendale (Kevin Guthrie), only for it to be interrupted by the shadow of the Great War. (Notes by David O’Mahony)
