Todd Solondz’s films depict the dark side of American suburbia. No subject proves taboo as he creates characters at once sympathetic and abhorrent, and he infuses even his bleakest work with richly caustic humour; Wiener-Dog continues this trend.

A dachshund becomes the pet of a child who has survived cancer, until his mother (Julie Delpy) brings it to the vet to be euthanised. However,
it is rescued by the adult Dawn Wiener (Greta Gerwig), the central character from Welcome to the Dollhouse (1995). A chance encounter with her old school bully (Kieran Culkin) leads to a road trip, after which the dog passes to a professor (Danny DeVito) who uses it
to exact revenge upon his disrespectful students. Finally, it is the pet of an elderly woman (Ellen Burstyn) when she receives an unexpected visit from her granddaughter (Zosia Mamet). (Notes by Kevin Coyne.)
