CLOUDS OF SILS MARIA

Director: OLIVIER ASSAYAS

124 minutes, France-Switzerland, 2014, Colour, D-Cinema

This film was released on Friday 15th May 2015 and is no longer screening.

Maria Enders (Juliette Binoche) is an internationally acclaimed star of stage and screen who has been asked to revisit a play that made her famous 20 years ago. Then she played the part of a beautiful young woman who drives her boss Helena to suicide. Now she is being asked to take on the role of the older woman. Her anxiety about taking on the challenge increases when she is told that Hollywood hellraiser Jo-Ann Ellis (Chloë Grace Moretz) is being approached to appear opposite her in the play. Maria escapes to a chalet in Sils Maria, a remote region of the Alps, to rehearse and weigh up her options. Her loyal assistant Valentine (Kristen Stewart) tags along as Maria’s sounding board and confidante.

Musing on performance, relationships, aging and modern media, there are many pleasures to be had from Olivier Assayas’ latest film, notably its glorious setting and the easy chemistry between Binoche and Stewart. (Notes by Michael Hayden)
