This beautiful film, based on the book Chanda’s Secrets, tells the story of a bright, twelve-year-old girl fighting to keep her family together in the face of prejudice. Focussing on the impact of HIV-AIDS in South Africa and the effect of the epidemic on children, family and community, the film was shot in a small village in Johannesburg. Played by newcomer Khomotso Manyaka, Chanda is a strong pre-teen whose mother, Lillian, becomes the victim of local gossip when her baby dies and she herself falls ill. When Lillian is forced to flee from her village, Chanda leaves her home and school in search of her mother and the truth.
