THE BIGGER PICTURE: GIRLFRIENDS

Having just moved in together, Susan (Melanie Mayron) is bereft when her best friend, Anne (Anita Skinner), an aspiring writer, announces she is leaving New York to marry Martin (Bob Balaban). Trying to make ends meet as a bar mitzvah photographer on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, Susan finds herself adrift in life and love in Claudia Weill’s seldom screened yet paradoxically highly influential gem from the last golden period of American cinema.

This screening will be introduced by Dr. Martha Shearer, School of English, Drama and Film, University College Dublin. Copies of Women and New Hollywood: Gender, Creative Labour and 1970s American Cinema, co-edited by Dr. Aaron Hunter, Dept. of Film, Trinity College Dublin, and Dr. Martha Shearer, will be available for sale afterwards.
