At a time when a serial killer is taunting police by sending them body parts of victims to the police via the Royal Mail, Barney Thomson is measuring out his uneventful life. He is an increasingly embittered Glasgow barber who yearns for a quiet life, yet he suffers humiliation in his job and endures some vicious condescension from his fierce mother, Cemolina. When a fatal accident changes the course of his life, he finds dogged cops on his back and desperately having to turn to his mother for help.

The directorial debut from celebrated actor Robert Carlyle is a committed and hilarious black comedy that moves at pace, and the attractions and districts of its Glasgow locations are wonderfully presented. Carlyle leads a great cast featuring Ray Winstone, Tom Courtenay, Ashley Jensen and Martin Compston, though it’s Emma Thompson who steals the show as mad matriarch Cemolina.
