FUTURES PAST: SOYLENT GREEN

Director: RICHARD FLEISCHER

97 mins, USA, 1973, Digital

This film screened 16th April 2016.

The year is 2022 and society is on the brink of collapse; runaway population growth has outstripped food resources, the oceans are dying and the greenhouse effect is raising temperatures across the globe.

The world’s population survives on rations produced by the Soylent Corporation, whose latest product, the titular Green, is more nutritious than ever before, but what exactly is it?

A murder investigation leadsdetective Frank Thorn (Charlton Heston) on a path to uncover the truth. A clever blend of dystopian sci-fi and police procedural, Soylent Green serves also as a wakeup call for how industrialisation is impacting the planet.

GUEST SPEAKER: Claire Anne O’Keefe (chef/food blogger/scientist) will discuss the subject of overpopulation before this film.

Screening as part of Futures Past: How Cinema of the Past Has Imagined Our Future, a season of films with guest speakers, presented in collaboration with Science Gallery Dublin.
